Industrial Communication Guide

Sequence control A control system that works through a sequence of steps.

Redundancy In this context, redundancy means that more than one of each com- ponent is available, so if a fault or disruption occurs, the function of the defective component can still be performed.

Shared Medium A shared medium is when components access a common transmis- sion medium and have to share the transmission capacity. Single-mode fiber optics Here the light of one wavelength is transmitted. Due to the low at- tenuation, this type of fiber optics is suitable for long distances. The fiber core has a diameter of 9µm in this case, while the diameter of the jacket is 125µm (notation: 9/125)

Regulator Regulator consists of a closed regulation cycle with direct feedback.

Repeater Signal or line amplifier which enables the maximum extension of a network to be enlarged.

SC Abbreviation for Subscriber Connector

SPE Single Pair Ethernet

SDCI Single-Drop Digital Communication Interface for small sensors and actuators. Sensor Measuring device capable of transformation physical quantities into electric signals

Token Passing Method Token passing is used in communication networks in order to define coordinated communication between components. A token is pas- sed on from one component to the next. Only the component holding the token may send messages to other components. The order in which the token is passed on from one component to the next has to be defined in advance.
