NFPA 70 – 2017 Edition

 The National Electric Code (NFPA 70) defines requirements for new electrical installations for any building, structure or premises. This code is used as the primary reference guide in the US by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) to insure compliance with electrical installation requirements

NFPA 79 – 2018 Edition

 Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery, applies to electrical/ electronic equipment, apparatus, or systems of industrial machines operating at a voltage of 1000 volts or less, commencing at the point of connection of the supply to the electrical equipment of the machine.  LAPP USA has actively attended and participated in NFPA 79 committee meetings for over 15 years

NFPA 79 2018: Chapter 1 – Administration

LAPP Interpretation

 NFPA 79 refers back to NFPA 70 (NEC) in areas requiring further explanation that are not clearly defined in NFPA 79  NFPA Article 336 defines UL Listed TC-ER (tray cable) permitting installation within cable trays of the industrial infrastructure in addition to the industrial platform. Examples: ÖLFLEX ® Tray II, Control TM, VFD Slim, VFD 2XL, Servo 7TCE, etc.

NFPA 79 2018: Chapter 4 – Power Conversion Equipment Excerpt from NFPA 79 - 2018 Edition

 All LAPP VFDs comply with the NFPA 79 2018 edition  1XL series - XHHW-2 and 2XL series – RHW-2  SLIM series including FD VFD – Specified based on equipment manufacturers instructions (project engineers, consultants, contractors, integrators, drive specialists, etc.)

Upcoming Chapter 4, paragraph 4.4.2.8 changes in the NFPA 79 2021 edition  Removal of specific cable markings (RHH, RHW, RHW-2, XHH, XHHW or XHHW-2)  Instead, cable and conductors selection to be in accordance with:  Equipment manufacturer’s recommendations and instructions  Chapter 12 – Conductors, Cables and Flexible Cords  All LAPP VFD products will continue to comply with the NFPA 79 2021 edition

 Other Listed cables such as TC-ER, PLTC-ER, ITC-ER, CMG already permitted within the industrial infrastructure can also be used on the industrial platform. Examples: ÖLFLEX ® TRAY II, UNITRONIC ® 300, BUS CAN Tray, etc .  Appliance Wiring Material (AWM) is permitted on the industrial platform where it has been identified for use with approved equipment and used per the manufacturer’s instructions. Examples: ÖLFLEX ® 490 P, 590 P, FD 90, Servo 9YSLCY-JB, etc.
